LCpl Craig Wyche, USMC Remembrance Ceremony
On Friday, 23 October 2020 we mark the 37th anniversary of the terrorist attack of the Marine Peace Keeping Force, who were deployed at the Beirut International Airport. During their deployment a terrorist drove his hijacked truck into the building that was serving as the barracks for the 1st Battalion 8th Marines (BLT), and then detonated his explosive. The death toll was 241 American servicemen: 220 Marines, 18 sailors, and 3 soldiers, making this incident the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States Marine Corps since World War II's Battle of Iwo Jima
Of those Marines killed, two were from Westchester County, Cpl James Jackowski and LCpl Craig Wyche. Our Detachment maintains scholarships in the name of these two Marines (please see http://www.mclwestchester.org/programs/Marine-Memorial-Scholarship-Fund.asp ), and we continue to remember their sacrifice.
On Friday, 23 October, at the Ossining High School, the Marine Corps League-Westchester County Detachment, Ossining Union Free School District, American Legion, Ossining Police Department, family, friends and neighbors gathered to remember Ossining High School graduate LCpl Craig Wyche, USMC who was one of the 220 Marines killed in the barracks bombing. Each year we move further from the event but we join together to keep the memory fresh and to honor his sacrifice.
Detachment member, MGen Robert Wolf, NYNM (ret) was the master of ceremonies, joined by Detachment members, Donald O'Keefe (Jr. Vice Commandant), Kevin Sylvester (Chief of Police, Ossining PD), Kelly Topilnycky, Steve Topilnycky (Adjutant Paymaster).
The benediction was give by the American Legion Chaplain, and the wreath was presented by Sergeant Dalwin Padila, USMC, Ossining Recruiting Station.
